Ed Policy stumping for Packers to play Lions in Munich next season
Packers CEO Ed Policy is interested in playing an international game each season and hopes to face Detroit in Germany this year.
PHOENIX – It may be inevitable that every NFL team will play at least one international game every season, but Green Bay Packers president and CEO Ed Policy doesn’t feel a need to wait for the next collective bargaining agreement to send his team back overseas. The Packers are protected from moving one of their nine home games out of Green Bay in 2026, Policy said. It remains possible the Packers could play a scheduled road game internationally.
Two current options exist: against the New Orleans Saints in Paris, or the Detroit Lions in Munich. Policy doesn’t mind stumping for his preference. “Frankly,” he said, “I would love to play the Lions in Munich this year.
” Much better than venturing into Ford Field. What makes that matchup even more of a possibility, aside from Policy’s understandable pleas to the league, is Germany was selected as one of three primary global markets for the Packers along with the United Kingdom and Ireland. “Playing through one of those markets,” Policy said, “I think would be really beneficial.
Not only are we marketing over there, not only are we getting some highlights in our games being shown over there, but for the fans to actually see our players up close and personal, I think that would be really meaningful. ” Policy said he would support the NFL not only requiring teams to play at least one international game each season, but the likely increase to an 18-game schedule that would be expected to accompany it. Both items are expected to be discussed before the next collective bargaining agreement with players expires following the 2030 season.
