OU softball pitching coach Jennifer Rocha returned to the field after battling cervical cancer and received a warm ovation.

NORMAN — In the middle of a chaotic third inning on a warm Tuesday night at Love’s Field, everything slowed down for a moment. From the Oklahoma dugout, a familiar figure emerged. It took about seven seconds for pitching coach Jennifer Rocha — crimson visor low, eyes locked on the circle — to make the walk.

It took even less time for the 3,861 fans in attendance to realize what it meant. They rose. The applause came first, then the ovation.

It was loud and emotional. It was for her. Rocha, back where she belongs, met Sydney Berzon in the circle as if it were any other inning.

But nothing about it was ordinary. “I really didn’t know how to react to the crowd,” Rocha said afterward. “My wheels were turning and the fans were going and I didn’t know whether to try to stay locked in or really let go for the crowd, but I’m really grateful and it felt good to hear that warm welcome back.
