Colorado Mark , a hall of fame literary contributor , wrote that he couldn’t wait to see the “burn Barnsy at the stake mob” gets revved up after Tennessee basketball got waylaid by Michigan in the Elite Eight of the Men's NCAA Tournament. In fact, fans weren’t that revved up after a third consecutive loss in the Elite Eight. Never mind that coach Rick Barnes has not won a national championship or led the Vols to their first-ever Final Four.
Few coaches in Tennessee history have won as consistently as he has. But fans are more revved up about the decline of Lady Vols basketball under coach Kim Caldwell. Jack writes: Your column was on the money about the Lady Vols.
And even though you likely have 90% agreement from Lady Vol fans, I would also call it courageous. Danny White is, rightfully, a popular AD and seems a tad touchy about criticism. Hopefully he takes your constructive advice.
My response: Neither athletic directors nor columnists should be touchy about criticism. It comes with both jobs. But there's not a courageous bone in my body.
