His double-digit strikeout performance marked one of the strongest first outings by a pitcher in club history, setting a franchise record with 10 strikeouts in a debut. Soroka worked efficiently, allowing no runs and limiting contact against the Tigers.
His ability to command the strike zone and generate swings and misses helped Arizona control the game and secure the win. One night later, infielder Jose Fernandez delivered a historic debut of his own. He recorded his first MLB hit in his first at-bat and later connected for his first career home run in his second at-bat. He wasn’t finished.
With the Diamondbacks trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning, with two outs and two runners on, Fernandez delivered the biggest swing of the night. He launched a 92 mph cutter for his second home run, a three-run shot that gave the D-backs a 7-5 lead.
