Wegner, who was behind home plate, lost track of strikes during the bottom of the fifth inning, allowing an at-bat to continue between Red Sox pitcher Brayan Bello and Astros outfielder Cam Smith -- despite the former swinging through three consecutive pitches to kickstart the whole shabang. Bello would ultimately walk Smith, which chased him from the game and forced his club to bring in relief help much sooner than it would have liked to. Wegner was asked about his mistake following the game, and to his credit, took full responsibility .
"I just watched the video. I didn’t know what happened until I came in here and apparently I somehow didn’t count the second swinging one because I said the count was 1-and-2. It was actually strike three," Wegner said, per pool reporter Chandler Rome "Had anybody caught it, we can always go and call replay and check the count.
