The San Diego Padres traded for Mason Miller from the A’s at the 2025 trade deadline and he joined the team as a setup man to then closer Robert Suarez. With the former starter in the bullpen with pitches hitting 100-plus mph on the radar gun combined with a wipeout slider, he quickly became a fan-favorite even if his acquisition did cost prized minor league shortstop Leodalis DeVries.
Even the Friar Faithful who were upset about losing the prized prospect typically have to follow their gripes about the trade with, “but Miller is really good. ” With Suarez having moved on to the Atlanta Braves during the offseason via free agency, Miller has stepped into the closer’s role with the Padres. When the 6-foot-5, 200-pound right-hander makes his entrance from the bullpen into the game and onto the pitcher’s mound he is typically accompanied by music and videoboard graphics.
