LSU All-American Cornerback Would Be Perfect Fit In Chiefs' Secondary

Yahoo Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs are thin in the secondary and need to draft replacements after trading CB Trent McDuffie and losing CB Jaylen Watson to the Los Angeles Rams.

The Kansas City Chiefs made some much-needed improvements to the offensive side of the football during free agency but need to have a strong draft to complete its offseason. The Chiefs had a lot more departures than additions in free agency, but the additions will transform the worst part of the offense in recent years: the running game. Kansas City tends to have success on the ground in short distances, but when it comes to explosive chunk plays, the Chiefs have ranked at or near the bottom of the National Football League.

The Chiefs were so bad in that department that it had the worst explosive run rate out of any offense over the past 25 years – yes, it was that bad. That trend won’t continue, though, as the Chiefs signed running back Kenneth Walker III to a three-year deal worth upwards of $45 million and fullback/defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga to a three-year contract of his own, worth $21 million. Walker is one of the league’s most explosive backs and he has a knack for generating bursts of speed that propel him through even the tiniest holes to produce big chunk plays.

Not only will Walker’s presence transform the ground game, but adding Tonga to be the occasional fullback is a great idea. Tonga is extremely strong and makes a living on the defensive line pushing and shoving. He should be an underrated weapon for the Chiefs as the team embarks on a new running scheme, which should include plenty of handoffs from under center, something the Chiefs rarely do.

Adding a premier running back to replace Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco was essential for general manager Brett Veach to get his team back on the right track, and now he can set his focus on improving defensively through the draft. The secondary is looking pretty thin , especially after trading away star cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams for draft capital. Not only did the Chiefs trade McDuffie to the Rams, but CB2 Jaylen Watson signed with the Rams as well.
