Former MTSU star Desmond Yates hired as Overton girls basketball coach

Former MTSU star Desmond Yates has been named the new Overton girls TSSAA basketball coach, MNPS announced.

Former MTSU men’s basketball star Desmond Yates has been hired as Overton’s girls TSSAA basketball coach, MNPS announced on March 31. Yates, who remains MTSU’s all-time leading scorer and has the most field goals (714), was previously assistant coach for the Overton boys team under John Hopson. Yates has also been coach for Team Mookie Betts in the Nike Elite Youth Champions League.

Yates was inducted into the MTSU Hall of Fame in 2021. He is MTSU's only three-time All-Sun Belt conference selection and averaged 14. 1 points and 4.

1 rebounds in 122 games with the Blue Raiders under former coach Kermit Davis. He scored 1,775 points in college.
