Trey Augustine, Michigan State goalie, signs with Detroit Red Wings
Goalie Trey Augustine has ended his Michigan State hockey career and will join the Detroit Red Wings' AHL affiliate.
The Detroit Red Wings added another goaltender-of-the-future to their fold on Tuesday, March 31. A few days after Michigan State hockey was knocked out of the NCAA Tournament, Trey Augustine has turned pro and is joining the Wings' AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins on a three-year, entry-level deal that begins with the 2026-27 season. The Wings selected Augustine, 21, in the second round (No.
43 overall), in the 2023 NHL Draft. The native of South Lyon is among 10 finalists for the 2026 Hobey Baker Award, presented annually to the top player in college hockey. PLAYOFF HUNT: Detroit Red Wings 'somewhat embarrassed' as coach renews criticism Augustine just completed his junior season at MSU, posting a 24-9-1 record with a 2.
11 goals-against average, a 0. 929 save percentage and three shutouts in 34 appearances. The 6-foot-1, 194-pound goalie was named Big Ten Goaltender of the Year for the second-consecutive season and earned a place on the All-Big Ten first team.
Augustine joins the Griffins just as their other goalie-of-the-future, Sebastian Cossa, is wrapping up his fourth year of pro hockey in the minors. Starting next season, Cossa, the team's first-round pick, at No. 15, in 2021, is no longer waiver-exempt, so he'll have to be on the Wings' roster.
