As the final season on his current contract moves closer to conclusion, the speculation regarding LeBron James’ future in the NBA has shifted into overdrive mode.
Everybody wants to know where – and if – The King will play next season. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors have been frequently floated as potential landing spots for James if he were to continue his career away from the Los Angeles Lakers , but we might have to add another team to the mix. In a recent article from ESPN’s Dave McMenamin and Tim Bontemps , the Los Angeles Clippers were named as a potential landing spot for James if Kawhi Leonard’s current contract is voided as a result of an investigation into Leonard’s Aspiration endorsement deal.
In that scenario, the Clippers could probably offer James more than the Lakers could and he would get to remain in L. A. Plus, James has a strong relationship with Clippers coach Ty Lue.
From ESPN: Several team personnel around the league speculated that if the NBA's investigation into Kawhi Leonard's Aspiration endorsement deal ended up with Leonard's contract being voided as a punishment, James could sign with the Clippers for more than the Lakers would offer him. The Clippers are coached by Tyronn Lue, with whom James won a championship in 2016 with the Cavaliers. James advocated for the Lakers to hire Lue in 2019, and the two maintain a strong rapport.
While it would be very strange to see James in a Clippers uniform, it’s apparently something that we can’t completely dismiss. James, 41, has been non-committal about his future all season long, and it seems like nobody quite knows what he’s going to do, and maybe he doesn’t even know. The Lakers are currently third in the standings in the Western Conference and potentially poised for a deep playoff run.
