Former Lady Vols basketball assistant Gabe Lazo hired by LSU, Kim Mulkey
Former Lady Vols basketball assistant Gabe Lazo, who resigned March 27, joined LSU coach Kim Mulkey's staff, LSU announced March 31.
Former Lady Vols basketball assistant Gabe Lazo has been hired by LSU. Lazo resigned from Tennessee coach Kim Caldwell's staff on March 27, and Caldwell hired former Florida State associate head coach Bill Ferrara to replace him. Lazo will replace Gary Redus II, who was hired to be the next coach at Rutgers .
"Gabe will be an outstanding addition to our staff," LSU coach Kim Mulkey said in a school release on March 31. "He has been an invaluable member of two SEC staffs with an unbelievable ability to teach the game and recruit the best players in the country. Gabe will impact our program at the highest level, and his unmatched work ethic will lead to great results on the court and on the recruiting trail.
"It doesn’t matter if Gabe is out recruiting or coaching on the floor, because the contributions he will make toward our program will be significant. " Lazo spent two seasons on Caldwell's staff , hired shortly after Caldwell was hired in April 2024. Lazo spent the previous two seasons at Mississippi State, where had been promoted to associate head coach just before his hiring.
Lazo was making $370,000 annually on the Lady Vols staff, according to UT's salary database. He was one of two assistants Caldwell hired from other SEC staffs when she got the Lady Vols job, along with Roman Tubner, who was hired from Alabama. Lazo, a Miami native, was also floated as a candidate for multiple head coaching jobs this offseason at USF , Memphis and UCF .
