Loss to Texas can’t dim bright future for Michigan women’s basketball
The Wolverines set several program records, including total points (2,880), scoring average (82.3) and Big Ten victories (15).
Fort Worth, Texas – It was a season of growth for the Michigan women’s basketball team, and while the Wolverines fell short of making the program’s first Final Four, the foundation laid earlier this decade by All-American Naz Hillmon continues to build upward. Michigan, ranked No. 9 nationally, earned a program-best No.
2 seed in the NCAA Tournament and reached its second Elite 8. But the Wolverines ran into more experienced Texas, a No. 1 seed coming off a Final Four appearance last year, and were soundly defeated, 77-41, on Monday night at Dickies Arena.
The Wolverines finish the season 28-7, tying a program-best win total. They set several program records, including total points (2,880), scoring average (82. 3 points per game) and Big Ten victories (15).
They were 17-1 at Crisler Center, their only loss to No. 2 UCLA by three points. And they accomplished this with a core group of sophomores, who said after the loss this was the experience they needed to take the next step next year.
