Tom Izzo addresses potential departures with transfer portal opening

Yahoo Sports

Tom Izzo gave his confidence level about his roster ahead of the transfer portal opening next week.

Michigan State basketball saw its season come to a close in the Sweet 16 this past Friday, falling to UConn. Since then, the conversation and attention has turned to the impending roster construction season. For MSU head coach Tom Izzo, he is tasked with retaining his team, while also preparing for the necessary additions to make his team a Final Four contender once again.

While talking with Tim Staudt, Izzo revealed that he does not believe anyone with eligibility will be leaving MSU, although he did note that the landscape of college athletics could have other plans. This would be intriguing, considering the Spartans are going to have a stockpile of players at the guard spot, with limited minutes to go around. With the portal opening in a week, it will be interesting to see what shakes out.

Izzo adds that he wouldn’t be surprised if anyone eligible to return might leave MSU based on the climate of college hoops, but also says he “kind of would be surprised” after meeting with his players Monday. Feels pretty good for the Spartans to get everyone back w/eligibility. — Chris Solari (@chrissolari) March 31, 2026 Contact/Follow us @ The SpartansWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Michigan State news, notes and opinion.
