Connecticut lawsuit should expose the WNBA’s Sun sale as the sham it was

The state of Connecticut should follow through on threats to take the WNBA to court.

The state of Connecticut will almost certainly lose a lawsuit against the WNBA. The state is exploring legal action against the WNBA for “wrongfully blocking a sale of the Connecticut Sun ... in a manner that may be anticompetitive and may violate state and federal law.

” If things go Connecticut’s way, they might get some more money for the Mohegan Tribe. But it’s unlikely to actually stop the team from moving to Houston. But that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t pursue this.

They should sue and recruit Steve Pagliuca to join them. Historically, Connecticut’s embrace of women’s basketball has been incredibly valuable to the growth of the game. They can add to that legacy by exposing the WNBA’s gross mismanagement here.

People who don’t care about women’s basketball or sports in general should care about this. Tax money and tourism dollars that might have stayed in New England if the process was fair will go to another region. Selling the Sun and moving the WNBA to Houston was rigged from the very beginning to steer the team to the owners of the Houston Rockets.
