Swanepoel's Pears spell 'out of our hands' - Giles

Worcestershire chief executive Ashley Giles says Beyers Swanepoel's future at the club is out of their hands after the South African left a domestic game early to catch a flight to the UK. The 27-year-old was playing for Lions against Titans in South Africa's One-Day Cup final on Sunday when he walked off the field with eight overs remaining. Cricket South Africa is now investigating the incident with Lions saying they had no idea of Swanepoel's intentions.

Worcestershire signed the South African all-rounder on a red-ball contract for the entire season in December. Their 2026 campaign gets under way at Derbyshire on Friday. "It's difficult to explain why whatever has happened has happened, but it has happened and Beyers would probably say he's made a bit of an error in hindsight," Giles told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"I can say there was no pressure on our side on Beyers' arrival in the country at that time, or taking those steps. "People make mistakes. Beyers is a good man, a good lad.

He's made an error in this case and we're trying to work our way through it. " Worcestershire must now wait on the investigation by CSA as overseas players require a No Objection Certificate before they can play abroad. The Pears were hoping that Swanepoel, who had a spell at Kent in 2024, would help their push for a return to Division One following last summer's relegation back to Division Two.
