Iowa football transfer portal WR could 'take offense to new heights'
ESPN is already high on Iowa's new transfer wideout, Tony Diaz, with potential to become a legitimate game-changer for the offense.
The Iowa Hawkeyes are back on the field with spring ball in full effect. After a strong 9-4 campaign in 2025, the Iowa Hawkeyes have their sights set on building upon that in 2026. With a roster reloaded with new talent on the offensive side of the ball, there is a belief that the Hawkeyes could continue growing.
Tim Lester enters his third year as Iowa 's offensive coordinator and has seen growth over the first two seasons. The quarterback competition is a known situation for the Hawkeyes during spring ball, but increasing production from the wide receiver spot is another area Iowa must grow. This offseason, Iowa went and snagged Tony Diaz, a highly-touted transfer portal product from UT Rio Grande Valley, and he is already making noise as Iowa's top newcomer, per ESPN.
WR Tony Diaz (UT Rio Grande Valley transfer) Why : Iowa's roster management is a model of consistency, but to reach higher heights, the Hawkeyes need to improve their passing game and pass rush. We project Elon transfer Edge Kahmari Brown will be impactful but are going with another FCS star on the offensive side of the ball. After ranking 127th nationally in passing offense in 2025 despite a 9-4 season, Iowa needed to upgrade its receiving corps.
Diaz is precisely the type of dynamic, playmaking wide receiver the Hawkeyes' offense has lacked. As a freshman he posted 67 catches for 881 yards and 11 TDs and his skills translate to the Power 4 level. His ability to win contested targets, make plays at all levels of the field, and generate yards after the catch should provide a massive boost to an Iowa passing attack that is in need consistent production.
