The Cleveland Guardians shuffled some pitchers around in new roster moves this week, and one of them comes with some risk.

The Guardians designated Doug Nikhazy for assignment, which comes with potential consequences. A player who is DFA'd is done so to remove them from the 40-man roster. It's usually done to create space for a different player on the 40 who wasn't already on it.

The potential problem is that to be fully designated for assignment, a player has to pass through waivers. While on waivers, a player can be claimed by any other team in baseball. And his pedigree means there's at least a chance he gets picked up by someone else. Nikhazy is a 26-year old lefty pitcher who was a second-round pick out of Ole Miss in the 2021 MLB Draft. He has made it to the majors for only two outings with the Guardians to this point, with a 13.
