Bowler top of the world after Norwegian victory
Nathan Caines is "talk of the shop floor" in Coventry after his victory in Norway.
A lawn bowler has been "talk of the shop floor" since he won a contest at the World Championships in Norway. Nathan Caines, from Kings Heath, Birmingham, said he took up the sport thanks to his grandfather and came out victorious with his partner in the pairs competition. The 25-year-old represents England on the international stage as well as bowling for two county teams, Warwickshire and Worcestershire and the West Midlands, and said he was not resting on his laurels.
"My first thought after winning in Norway was 'now we have to retain the title'," Caines said. Caines works as a warehouse team leader at Lawton Tubes in Coventry and the firm gave him extra time off to take part in the tournament in Norway earlier this month. Jon Brealey, operations manager at the Torrington Avenue firm, said "it's safe to say he has been the talk of the shop floor and we're really proud of his achievements".
Caines said his work as a warehouse manager in Coventry gave him the skills to be a successful bowler [BBC] The pairs title in the championships was not Caines' first brush with success. He was part of an England team that won the British Bowls Championship in Solihull in November, the first time England have won the title in 20 years. Caines said playing bowls was similar to his day job, running a warehouse for a copper tube manufacturer.
"It's all about teamwork and communicating with each other," he said. "The fact that I am practicing and honing these skills on a daily basis in the warehouse has definitely helped me sharpen up my bowls. " Follow BBC Coventry & Warwickshire on BBC Sounds , Facebook , X and Instagram .
