End of a Spartan Era: Comeaux closure sends shockwaves through athletics
As Comeaux shuts its doors, Spartan athletes are left to adapt, compete and carry their pride into an uncertain next chapter.
Shockwaves are still coursing through the Spartan community since it was announced that Comeaux High School will be closing down after 60 years. The Lafayette Parish School Board voted to close the campus in early March, with plans to convert it to a career and technical education center. Thus making the 2025-26 school year its last.
It also marks the last sports seasons for all of the Spartans, something athletes and coaches alike had no clue heading into their respective sports seasons. “It’s kind of like they don’t care or worry about our tradition that we have here,” Comeaux football head coach Marquis Newsome said. “I’m not saying we are a powerhouses, but Comeaux has always been different and diverse.
The coaching and programs that we built here were something special. ” “Now I have no home school, no alma mater,” Newsome said. “Our 25th reunion was coming up this year, so it was extra special for me and I thought we would have a big party, but I guess it wasn’t in the books.
” Newsome, who also teaches math at the school and is a 2001 Comeaux alum, still doesn’t know what’s next for him or his student athletes careers. All they do know is that they want to make the most of these last few months together in a school that’s also like home for many. End of a Spartan Era “My initial reaction, it was actually hard to believe, it almost wasn’t real,” Comeaux running back Jaden Celestine said on when he found out the school was closing.
