Former Chiefs Cornerback Is Getting Plenty Of Love From Rams Coach Sean McVay

The Kansas City Chiefs traded Trent McDuffie for draft capital, but his new team is loving his versatility.

The Kansas City Chiefs traded cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams because McDuffie wanted to reset the market at his position, but the Chiefs are well aware of the versatility the cornerback provides. The Chiefs have chosen go in a different direction with their secondary, but Rams coach Sean McVay is clearly impressed with what McDuffie brings to the table as he told Steve Wyche of NFL Media why the cornerback fit the Rams’ situation in a report written by Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “He’s got the ability to play field, boundary, star, he can play the dime spot if you wanted him to,” McVay said.

“What he does do is he allows us to be able to move the hard downs around, be able to change the math in our favor. ” The money math here is part of the reason the Rams made this deal. The Rams got a positive jolt recently when quarterback Matthew Stafford announced that he’d be returning for the 2026 season when he accepted the MVP awards for 2025.

That announcement opened the Rams’ Super Bowl window for another year, so the Rams decided to fix their secondary. They’re taking a gamble by trading a total of four draft picks for McDuffie, including their first-rounder this year, and they think adding McDuffie will solve some of the secondary issues they had during their deep playoff run last season. “The more I get to know him, every time I talk to him I just leave that conversation feeling better about myself just because of the way that he is,” McVay said.

“And I’m excited to be able to work with him. ” It’s going to take a lot for the Rams to get past the Seattle Seahawks in 2026, but McDuffie does represent a defensive weapon of sorts on a defense that used to rely on tackle Aaron Donald to make big plays. McVay knows full well that Stafford is going year-to-year now, so it makes sense for the Rams to go all-in on McDuffie.
