The Houston Comets are coming home
A Comet is heading our way in the form of the iconic WNBA basketball team. In 2027, the new team will land. Houston Rockets owner Tillman Fertitta recently announced the purchase of the Connecticut Sun.
That team will come to Houston using the name of a dynasty: the Houston Comets. One of the Houston Comets' powerhouse players, Cynthia Cooper, was once a coach for the TSU women’s basketball team. Although the current players weren’t even born when the Comets made history, the legacy is alive.
And they are hopeful this new team will chart its own path. A Houston dynasty is making a hot return, and the city is the proper landing pad. “I love the story of the WNBA because it’s definitely about perseverance,” current TSU women’s head coach Vernette Skeete said.
The Houston Comets won the first four WNBA championships. Those wins cemented a legacy. “Visibility is important; it’s essential if you can’t see it, you can’t dream it," Skeete said.
She remembers watching the Comets dominate in those early seasons. Point guard Aaliyah Henderson is excited about the new Comets' future and women's basketball. “I feel like they, the Comets, and what they did they said a tone for us to be able to make our own path in our own way, and yeah, I’m just really excited,” Henderson said.
