FTCC hosts athletics banquet after inaugural seasons
Forsyth Technical Community College marked a major milestone on March 19, holding its first-ever athletics banquet to celebrate the success of its inaugural year of women’s volleyball, men’s basketball and esports. This was the first time in Forsyth Tech’s history that the college fielded NJCAA athletic teams, but each team had a winning record in its inaugural season. Forsyth Tech’s inaugural women’s volleyball team delivered an impressive 15-8 record in its first season.
“This group set the standard,” Head Coach Sarah Weavil said. “They proved this program belongs and created something future teams will build on. ” The following six players were recognized during the banquet for their achievements: Sophia Blackledge, Karlie Huffman, Victoria Richardson, Emma Sechrist, Emma Willard and Lilly Winslow.
The Volleyball Teammate of the Year Award was presented to Lilly Winslow, recognizing her consistency, selflessness and commitment to her team. The esports program finished with a 51-28 overall record in NJCAA Esports competition. The program featured 31 players competing across 17 teams and eight game titles, highlighting the range of skills and strategies required for success, Esports Coordinator Kevin McCann said.
“That’s not just a number—it’s a reflection of dedication, adaptability, and resilience. Behind every match was preparation, communication, and a commitment to improving not just as individuals, but as teams,” McCann said. Several esports athletes were recognized for their performance: Game Changer Award: Stephen Johnson Breakout Player Award: Jaymon Harrison Esports MVP: Jahmar Branch The men’s basketball team clinched the regular season Region 10 Division 2 championship with an overall record of 25-5 (19-3 in the conference).
The team led its region in assists per game, averaging 22. Several players earned Region 10 Division 2 recognition: Darnerian Gibson, who was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and First Team All-Region; Kyri Wilson, who led the region in assists and made Third Team All-Region; and Cal Barrett, who made Third Team All-Region. Head Coach Lucas Hunter was also recognized as the Region 10 Division 2 Coach of the Year.
