Former Alabama star joins Kentucky basketball coaching staff

This former Alabama star, who was an All-SEC guard with the Crimson Tide, is returning to the SEC and joining a rival's coaching staff.

A former Alabama Crimson Tide basketball star is joining the Kentucky Wildcats ' coaching staff. Former Crimson Tide guard Mo Williams, who played at Alabama from 2001-2003, was announced as an assistant coach on Mark Pope's Kentucky staff Monday. Williams had been the head coach at Jackson State the past four seasons and was previously head coach at Alabama State for two seasons.

Williams' son, Mason Williams, a four-star prospect, recently committed to Kentucky . Williams said in a statement posted to social media . "I want to thank Ashley Robinson for giving me the opportunity to come back home and lead the Jackson State men's basketball program.

To be able to come back to Jackson and lead the hometown team is something I did not take lightly, and I want to thank AD Robinson and the university for believing in me. My family and I will always call Jackson home, and I want to thank the fans and alumni for the love and support they showed us over the last four years, and showing why we love Jackson... I wish nothing but the best to Jackson State as they move forward.

" Williams played in 64 games across two seasons at Alabama under Mark Gottfried before going on to play 13 seasons in the NBA. Most notably, Williams was a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers' 2016 NBA championship team. In his freshman season in Tuscaloosa in 2001-02, Williams made 35 starts.
