Giants address multiple areas of need in Matt Miller's 7-round mock draft
The New York Giants address several areas of need (and make some odd picks) in Matt Miller's 7-round mock draft.
The New York Giants have seven selections in the upcoming NFL draft -- the fifth and 37th overall picks and then five selections on Day 3. Of course, they can (and probably will) make some moves on or before the draft to better their lot, but most mock drafters are operating under the assumption that they will likely stand pat. The Giants do not have a third- or seventh-round selection in this draft due to trades.
Their third-round pick was surrendered in the deal with Houston to move up for quarterback Jaxson Dart last year, and they swapped their seventh-rounder with Dallas' sixth-round pick in another deal. ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller recently revealed his full seven-round draft. Here is who he sees the Giants ending up with.
Round 1, Pick 5: Caleb Downs, S, Ohio State The Giants have a bunch of needs to choose from with this pick -- with receiver and right tackle being prominent ones -- but Downs' fit with new coach John Harbaugh can't be ignored. Having coached Ed Reed and Kyle Hamilton in Baltimore, Harbaugh knows the value of a versatile, smart safety prospect. That describes Downs, who started immediately at Alabama as a freshman and for two seasons at Ohio State.
Pairing him with Jevon Holland would give New York a dynamic duo at safety while needs elsewhere can be addressed later. No matter who the Giants pick here, they'll be leaving a player, or players, on the board that many fans wanted. In this case, wide receiver Carnell Tate, cornerback Mansoor Delane, and linebacker Sonny Styles.
