Will the NFL season expand? Owners weigh in at League Meeting
Discussions heated up at the NFL League Meeting this week on whether or not the regular season show continue to grow.
There has been plenty of speculation since the NFL expanded from 16 regular-season games to 17 regular-season games in 2021, which marked the league's first change to the schedule in 43 years, that more growth would soon be on the way. And at the NFL League Meeting on Monday, several owners came out in support of further expansion. The first to speak out was Carlie Irsay-Gordon, the owner of the Colts.
She spoke in favor of seeing the league expand to an 18th game if the players are willing to do so. โI think, as long as the players want it โ which I think they would, because it would mean more revenue and, ultimately, a better product โ I think itโs reasonable and something we should work toward," she said . She was also joined in support of the move by Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who is in favor of expanding to 18 games, but only provided that three conditions are met: the preseason shrinks to two games, a second bye week is added for each team, and all 32 teams must play an international game each year.
What comes of the move to expand the season remains to be seen, and it's unlikely we'll see a decision one way or the other anytime soon. But it's becoming clear that there is support for a potential move to 18 games, which means eventually, the league will likely get its way and make it happen.
