Teams thought Rams faked Matthew Stafford's back injury to let him rest in camp

People from the Jaguars went up to Matthew Stafford in London and said they thought the Rams faked his back injury.

Matthew Stafford missed all of training camp with a back injury last summer , an injury that had all of Los Angeles in a panic before the season. Sean McVay even thought the Rams QB would have to start the year on injured reserve because it wasn’t healing as quickly as they expected. The injury was very real, despite what some other teams around the NFL believed.

In an interview with ProFootballTalk Live on Monday, McVay revealed that some teams thought the Rams faked Stafford’s injury to give him time off in training camp. “Going through the back thing, a lot of people think we faked that to give him off in training camp,” he said. “We played teams and games – we were playing the Jags in London and he said a couple of the coaches came up and said, ‘Man, what a cool deal, Sean let you have off of training camp with the back thing.

’ And he’s like, ‘Man, what the hell you talking about?! That s--- was real, man! ’” Stafford went through various types of treatment for his back, including an epidural to help with the pain and a mysterious, futuristic Ammortal chamber that was stationed at the Rams’ facility.

The Rams tried everything to get him on the field for weeks, but the best thing for his back was rest. Eventually, Stafford did return to practice and was ready for Week 1, which propelled him to an MVP season and the best year of his NFL career to date. If the Rams wanted to give him time off in training camp, they would have done just that – without the need to fake an injury.
