Sean McVay: 'Wouldn't shock me' if Matthew Stafford plays more than 1 year
Matthew Stafford is only committing to one more season right now, but Sean McVay wouldn't be surprised if he plays beyond 2026.
Matthew Stafford has taken it year to year with the Los Angeles Rams in each of the last two seasons, signing revised contracts in 2024 and 205. He’ll likely do that again in 2026, too. Though he committed to playing one more year during his MVP acceptance speech in February, he never said this will be his last season.
That leaves the door open for him to return in 2027, and again in 2028…and again in 2029. No one knows how long Stafford plans to play. Not even he knows.
But Sean McVay wouldn’t be surprised if he comes back again after the 2026 season. The Rams coach said as much during the annual league meeting on Monday, holding out hope that Stafford keeps playing beyond this coming season. Sean McVay said the Rams do think about life after Matthew Stafford, though "it wouldn't shock me if he played more than one year.

McVay, of course, would have no problem if Stafford wanted to stick around that long. "He's gonna be able to play as long as he's able to, whether that's one, two more, who knows, he might be one of those guys that plays late into his 40s and I wouldn't have a problem with that," he said .
