Sean McVay hoping for a reunion with Kirk Cousins, Jimmy Garoppolo for Rams backup QB job
Sean McVay wants to reunite with a veteran quarterback this offseason.
The Los Angeles Rams are in the market for a backup quarterback behind Matthew Stafford and head coach Sean McVay isn’t playing coy on who he wants to fill that role. McVay brought up Jimmy Garoppolo and Kirk Cousins as players he would love to have behind Stafford on the team’s depth chart. The Garoppolo mention shouldn’t come as a surprise, as he served as Stafford’s backup in both 2024 and 2025.
It’s not uncommon for coaches to talk about wanting one of the team’s free agents back. But the Cousins mention is notable, as McVay brought up the veteran unprompted. Plus, the two have history together.
When asked about the situation, McVay said Garoppolo has earned the ability to take his time and consider all options before making a decision. Then, McVay added admitted that the team has also talked about Cousins, per the Rams’ website. “If it's not Jimmy, (like) Kirk Cousins?
Of course. I'd love to be able to be able to see what that looks like. So those are two guys we've talked about.
