Browns GM Andrew Berry gives discouraging update on Martin Emerson Jr.
Cleveland Browns' general manager Andrew Berry gave a discouraging update regarding the team's former cornerback, Martin Emerson Jr., in free agency.
The Cleveland Browns , following a massive acquisition spree during the 2026 NFL Free Agency period, will look to continue their rebuilding efforts leading up to the upcoming season. While general manager Andrew Berry focused on revamping the offensive side of the ball this offseason, the front office still managed to sign former New York Jets star linebacker Quincy Williams to replace veteran Devin Bush. Williams is now set to reunite with newly-hired defensive coordinator Mike Rutenberg , who was his linebackers coach from 2021 to 2024.
However, there is one former Browns’ defensive back that remains on the free agency market this offseason, in 2022 third-round pick Martin Emerson Jr . The 25-year-old cornerback missed the entire 2025 NFL season after suffering a torn Achilles tendon during training camp, but is set to make a return this season. When asked about whether or not the Browns would be willing to re-sign Emerson this offseason, Berry told reporters on Sunday that he would love for the young defensive back to return to Cleveland in 2026, but understands that he could sign elsewhere and compete for a starting job.
"Selfishly would love to have him back," Berry stated. "I think we're also realistic that with MJ and the injury that he's coming off of, to reach his personal goals, he's also got to be in a position where he has maybe a strong opportunity to compete for a starting spot. That's probably a little bit harder with how we're configured with Denzel [Ward] and Tyson [Campbell].
But certainly if that changes... we'd love to have him back. " Could Emerson Return to Cleveland This Offseason?
