Sean McVay says Rams are eyeing these 2 backup QBs in free agency
Sean McVay says the Rams are looking at Jimmy Garoppolo and Kirk Cousins for their backup QB role.
One position the Los Angeles Rams have yet to address is backup quarterback. Matthew Stafford is returning for his 18th season in 2026, but the Rams donโt have a viable backup behind him. Thatโs because Jimmy Garoppolo remains a pending free agent , and Stetson Bennett is unlikely to ascend into the vacant QB2 spot.
On Monday at the annual league meeting in Phoenix, Sean McVay said the Rams are eyeing two veterans to back up Stafford: Garoppolo and Kirk Cousins. Cousins was cut by the Atlanta Falcons this offseason, while Garoppoloโs one-year contract expired at the start of the league year. The Rams are still hoping for a reunion with Garoppolo , but Cousins is an option.
"I think Jimmy's working through his process right now. Would love to be able to have him," McVay said on ProFootballTalk. "There's some other guys that are out there, but we do need to be able to add another guy into that room, and that's something that we're looking at.
Obviously, people make some of the connections with Kirk, and if it doesn't work out with Jimmy, that's definitely something that โ Kirk is as influential as anybody in helping me get to LA in the first place. I know he's got some other options and some other suitors, but Jimmy and Kirk are guys that I would love to be able to have back with us. " Sean McVay says Rams are interested in Kirk Cousins as the backup to Matthew Stafford.
