In Texas State softball's series loss to Marshall, overreliance on superstars stands out
Texas State softball fell to Marshall 2-1 on Sunday, as it lost its second consecutive Sun Belt series.
SAN MARCOS — Texas State softball trailed Marshall 2-1 in the fifth inning Sunday when infielder Aiyana Coleman stepped up with two outs and the bases loaded. The Bobcats had only mustered three hits, all singles, off Thundering Herd pitcher Jules King. But Coleman, one of the Sun Belt's best hitters, carried a sense of inevitability with her to the plate.
She had flown out and grounded out in her two previous at-bats. The senior leads Texas State in RBIs and home runs and has the second-best batting average (. 338) among starters.
Surely, she'd come through for her team as she had many times before. MORE: No. 1-ranked Longhorns narrowly defeat Bobcats Coleman connected with King's second pitch, sending the ball harmlessly into the glove of Marshall outfielder Diamond Leslie.
The Bobcats would not record another hit for the rest of the game, losing their second consecutive Sun Belt series 2-1. "Doesn't do any good to swing at pitches that you shouldn't be swinging at," Texas State coach Ricci Woodard said.
