On Saturday, the Red Sox fought back after the Reds jumped out to an early deficit, but fell in extra innings. On Sunday, Boston jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hold on to win. Starting pitcher Connelly Early exited the game with a two-run lead in the sixth inning.
He left Matt McLain on first base, who singled to begin the sixth inning. Greg Weissert took over with one out in the inning and walked Sal Stewart to bring Eugenio Suarez to the plate as the go-ahead run. Weissert jumped ahead of Suarez 0-2 and tried to elevate a four-seam fastball for the punchout.
Suarez fouled the first fastball off to stay alive, and Weissert went back to the same pitch. This one stayed down and inside, and Suarez pulled it into the left field bleachers to give the Reds the lead. After the game, Weissert held himself accountable .
