Joey Browner, Vikings Ring of Honor DB, dies at 65
Longtime Minnesota Vikings DB Joey Browner has died at the age of 65.
Minnesota Vikings legendary safety Joey Browner died on March 28 at the age of 65, the team announced . No cause of death was shared in the team's announcement. Browner was selected by the Vikings with the 19th pick in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft.
The USC product became the first defensive back to be drafted in the first round by the Vikings in the team's history. He went on to play nine seasons with the team from 1983 to 1991 before finishing his career the following year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The safety was inducted into the Vikings' Ring of Honor in 2013, adding that to a career that included three first-team All-Pro selections, six consecutive Pro Bowl honors and was later named to the 1980s NFL Team of the Decade.
"The Ring of Honor is something that is very special because there are very few of us that are in there," Browner said of his induction, via the Vikings' team site. "To be with people like Fran Tarkenton and Jim Marshall … Chris Doleman, John Randle, it's just a great honor. " Browner appeared in 145 games and totaled 37 interceptions, including three returned for a touchdown, and 17 forced fumbles to go along with 9½ career sacks.
