Chiefs' Biggest Needs Revealed Ahead Of NFL Draft
Defensive departures and offensive needs loom. See which key positions the Kansas City Chiefs must target to bolster their roster ahead of the NFL Draft.
There is good news and bad news for the Kansas City Chiefs right now. The bad news is that plenty of players left this offseason, with several key defensive players either signing in free agency or leaving via trade. Those include Bryan Cook, Jaylen Watson, Leo Chenal and Trent McDuffie, and the offense saw some departures with Isaih Pacheco and Hollywood Brown among the notable losses.
The good news is that the Chiefs did win big with the RB addition of Kenneth Walker III, and Alohi Gilman is a decent addition to the defensive secondary. The Chiefs also have an extra first-round pick that they got in the McDuffie trade with the Los Angeles Rams, and ESPN's Field Yates has the Chiefs grabbing one impact player on both sides of the ball in the first round. ESPN also revealed the biggest needs for the Chiefs, and it isn't much of a surprise: Wide receiver, defensive tackle, and edge.
The WR position is one big area they need to address, and Yates had the Chiefs selecting Arizona State star Jordyn Tyson at No. 9 overall. Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy are there, and Tyquan Thornton re-signed once again, but Kansas City could use a bona fide WR1 to give Patrick Mahomes another key piece, even with tight end Travis Kelce coming back for at least one more season.
On the other hand, edge is a very glaring need, and here's what ESPN's Nate Taylor wrote about that issue. "The Chiefs don't have a quality pass rusher on the edge oppositeย George Karlaftis . " Now, with Justin Herbert, Bo Nix and Fernando Mendoza (most likely) being the quarterbacks in the AFC West, adding a premier pass rusher is a very important move that needs to be made.
