Mike Vrabel shows off impressive scouting skills at ASU Pro Day
Mike Vrabel got hands-on with a potential draft target at Arizona State's Pro Day.
You don't always get NFL head coaches to attend a Pro Day to scout players. And even when you do, it's even rarer to see it end with that coach drilling with a potential draft target on the field. But Mike Vrabel isn't your average NFL coach.
Vrabel was in attendance earlier this week at Arizona State's Pro Day, and he was spotted on the field with offensive line prospect Max Iheanachor, who is projected as a 1st to 2nd Round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Vrabel got hands-on with the potential draft target for the Patriots, running through drills with the 6-foot-5 offensive tackle. Vrabel's interaction with Iheanachor went viral online, as many fans were not expecting to see an acting head coach get physical with someone whom they might be coaching within the year.
But Vrabel also brings a unique perspective to his job that not all coaches have, and his Pro Day activities make perfect sense when this is taken into consideration. That's because Vrabel was an NFL linebacker for 14 years, earning All-Pro honors once, capturing three Super Bowl Championships, and finishing his career with 229 tackles and 58 sacks. That's a lot of experience going against – and often beating – offensive linemen on the gridiron.
And that experience makes for a coach who knows better than just about anyone what to look for in a successful talent in the trenches. So when you see Vrabel doing drills with his hand on offensive linemen at a Pro Day like this, you can rest assured he's likely getting a pretty good idea of whether a talent is the correct fit or not – he's not just reliving the glory days. And just what did he think of Iheanachor?
