This is Liverpool's chance to finally replace Cody Gakpo with dream winger Liverpool finally have a chance to replace Cody Gakpo and replace him with a dream winger. The Reds want to compete at the very highest level, both domestically and in Europe. To do that, they need attackers who can deliver consistently week in, week out - something Cody Gakpo has struggled to provide, particularly when deployed on the left wing.
There’s no denying he has quality. He’s shown flashes of what he can do, popping up with important goals and moments of real promise - especially during the Premier League title winning campaign last season. But those glimpses have been too sporadic to cement his place as a guaranteed starter in a side that aspires to be among Europe’s elite.
At the top level, consistency is everything, and that’s where questions remain. One of the biggest concerns is his limited impact in one vs one situations. Modern wingers are expected to beat their man, stretch defences, and create opportunities out of nothing.
Too often, Gakpo struggles to assert himself in these moments, failing to impose his presence on the game or truly trouble opposition full-backs. There’s also an element of predictability to his play. He frequently looks to cut inside onto his stronger right foot and shoot from the left-wing, but defenders have started to anticipate that move.
