The 35-year-old has featured regularly this season, but just because of Tino Livramento’s injury absence.
With the veteran no longer considered part of Eddie Howe’s strongest starting XI when the squad is fully fit, it’s fair to assume he’d like to get some playing time elsewhere. According to Football Insider , that’s indeed the case as Trippier is ready to leave NUFC at the end of the season if he does not receive clear assurances about his role moving forward. Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown outlined the situation for the outlet.
“Trippier’s future is still up in the air,” Brown said. “Had Tino Livramento not had his injury issues this season, he might not have played anywhere near the number of games he has played. “So he might be looking at what his role is going to be in the team long-term, and if he’s not going to be involved as regularly, he could go and play somewhere else.
“I’m told, at this stage of his career, he wants to be playing regularly, not just sitting on the bench. ” Contract discussions are expected to hinge on that understanding, and one has to assume that there is no way Newcastle will guarantee Trippier—as great a Magpie as he’s been since arriving from Atletico Madrid—such a role going forward. “So I’m sure he’ll seek assurances about what their plans are for him if they’re going to offer him a new contract, and that’s going to be the key,” Brown said.
“There are plenty of clubs in England and in Europe who could do with an experienced player like Trippier and could offer him more regular football than he’ll get at Newcastle. ” Even though Tino Livramento is likely to leave Newcastle this summer on his way to Manchester City, the Magpies would do much better keeping Trippier seated while bringing a proper starter from elsewhere rather than trusting a man closer to 40 than 30.
