The Italian was able to snatch first place from Oscar Piastri after a safety car derailed the McLaren driver's afternoon at Suzuka. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc rounded out the podium, with George Russell fourth, world champion Lando Norris fifth, and Lewis Hamilton sixth.
Max Verstappen, who was eliminated in Q2 of qualifying on Saturday, could only manage P8. It had looked like being a largely disappointing day for Antonelli after he dropped from first to sixth on the opening lap, but the critical moment came when Oliver Bearman's heavy crash triggered the safety car. With the top three of Piastri, Russell and Leclerc having already pitted, Antonelli was able to make a much quicker stop under the safety car conditions, allowing him to regain the race lead.
