The Boston Bruins knew they had something special with Boston College center James Hagens when they selected him with the seventh overall pick in last year’s draft.
But even general manager Don Seeney himself could not have expected the 19-year-old to have a 23-goal, 24-assist season in his second year with the Eagles. His play in the NCAA earned him an AHL contract with the Bruins organization, which the young forward signed on March 23. Just five days later, Hagens lit the lamp for the first time in his professional career while playing in his home debut for the Providence Bruins against the Bridgeport Islanders on Saturday night.
The goal came nearly halfway through the third period in front of a packed crowd in Providence. Hagens was playing meaningful power-play minutes when forward Riley Tufte teed him up for a clapping one-time slap shot. Tufte, who had a hat trick on the night, put it on Hagens’ tape, and the rookie sniped the near side corner for his first career professional goal.
