Detroit's Offense Goes Quiet In First Loss Of The Season

Yahoo Sports

I will give the Tigers credit for one thing: their offensive showing tonight allowed me to start writing this post-game recap in the eighth inning. I would’ve been happy to go back and rewrite things, but I knew that once Mason Miller got brought into the game, Detroit was gonna have trouble creating any traction. There’s nothing terribly embarrassing about this first Tigers loss of this season.

They were outpitched and outplayed. Still, it felt like Detroit had momentum early, getting some runners on base and the first inning against Vasquez. As we’ve seen so many times, this team had a runner thrown out at the plate while insisting on running on contact.

I know it has worked for them in the past, but it led to a wasted opportunity, and shortly after that, the Tigers found themselves playing from behind. This was a good series to start the year for the Tigers. I don’t think anyone would deny that.

West Coast trips have been the bane of our existence for a long time. The fact that you can begin this 2026 campaign with a series win on the road against the competitive Padres team is a good thing. Still, every time Detroit has an offensive outing quite like this, there are going to be people who wonder if this team has enough firepower to be one of the top teams in the American League.

A three-game sample size is way too small to decide what this team truly is, but given the way things went last year, there’s going to be extra harsh criticism for this team every time they have a night like this, where they’re completely shut down offensively. Again, it’s a really small sample size, but I think one major positive from this opening series was what we saw from the bullpen. The pitching staff as a whole was fine, but there are a lot of fresh faces in this bullpen, and pretty much all of them put up zeros in this series.
