Denver Summit smash NWSL attendance record in first home game

Denver Summit FC easily broke the NWSL's single-match attendance record on Saturday, with an announced crowd of 63,004 attending the team's first ever home match. The expansion side faced the Washington Spirit at Empower Field at Mile High โ€” home of theย  Denver Broncos . The attendance easily broke the previous record of 40,061, set last year when the Spirit faced Bay FC at Oracle Park in San Francisco.

Denver is one of two expansion franchises to enter the NWSL this year along with Boston Legacy FC, taking the league up to 16 teams. Denver, we are officially home ๐Ÿ˜ญ pic. twitter.

The Colorado side will play the majority of its home games this year at Centennial Stadium, a 12,000-seat temporary venue that will be used for two years until the team has a permanent stadium of its own. In December, the club received approval from the Denver City Council to move forward with a proposed 14,500-seat stadium to be built in the city's Santa Fe Yards district.
