Texas A&M basketball officially extends coach Bucky McMillan

Texas A&M's 2025-2026 season was an undeniable success under first-year head coach Bucky McMillan , as the Aggies finished the year with a 22-12 record, including an 11-7 finish in the SEC, while earning the program's fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. None of this was expected, especially after McMillan was the last Power Five head coach hired just three days after Buzz Williams officially departed for Maryland. Having to completely rebuild a roster gutted after Williams' departure, McMillan landed more than a dozen veterans from the transfer portal, including senior forward Rashaun Agee, who led the Aggies in scoring and rebounds throughout the year.

Aided by an experienced lineup with immense depth, the loss of star transfer forward Mackenzie Mgbako forced McMillan to play with a small guard-centric lineup in conference play. After starting 7-1 in the SEC, Texas A&M's up-and-down play led to a four-game losing streak, but ending the regular season with key victories over Kentucky and LSU solidified the Aggies' chances of making the NCAA Tournament, receiving a 10-seed, and facing 7-seed Saint Mary's in the first round. After defeating the Gaels, Texas A&M was simply outmatched in size and talent by the Houston Cougars and faced an uphill climb after trailing by 18 points at halftime, only to lose by 31.

However, the fact that McMillan's newly formed roster even made the big dance was a massive achievement, setting the stage for an important offseason to once again rebuild the 2026-2027 roster through the transfer portal. While one season usually does not result in a contract extension, Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts feels that Bucky McMillan is the right fit for a program on the rise, as it was revealed on Friday that an extension was in place, and confirmed Saturday that McMillan has signed an extension that runs through to 2032. Here is what Trev Alberts had to say after the news broke: "Bucky McMillan is one of the most innovative minds in college basketball and we are so proud of the success the team had this season," Alberts stated.

"He and his staff have built a foundation for Aggie basketball that is centered around relentless energy, modern analytics and a culture players love to be part of. We believe in his vision and Bucky Ball is here to stay. " McMillan's future in College Station is not secure for the next six years, and, on paper, Alberts getting this done early in the process will prevent any outside teams from poaching the rising star in the coming months, especially with the potential after effects of the North Carolina and potential Kansas head coach openings.
