Sophomore state champion Walter soars onto Class B basketball all-state first team

Mar. 28—MITCHELL — Powered by players that helped their teams reach the state tournament, the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association Class B boys basketball all-state first team features a deep pool of talented players. The Class B boys all-state first team includes De Smet senior center Grant Wilkinson, who was selected as the coaches' player of the year in Class B.

Sully Buttes' Wesley Wittler and Viborg-Hurley's Brady Schroedermeier were selected as seniors, while Castlewood junior Kamden Keszler, Wall junior Teelan Kjerstad and Freeman sophomore David Walter were on the first team. Walter, a 6-foot-5 sophomore guard, helped power Freeman to the Class B state championship for the first time since 1975. He had 17.

7 points and 7. 5 rebounds per game, while shooting 64. 7% from the field and 42.

9% on 3-pointers and hitting 75% of his free throws. He is the first Freeman first-team all-state selection since Eli Hofer in 1998. Wilkinson, a 6-foot-10 center, had an imposing season with 24.

4 points and 18. 8 rebounds per game, plus 45 blocks. He shot 56% from the field in powering the Bulldogs to the Class B state tournament.
