Youth, veterans both represented on Class A boys basketball all-state team

Mar. 28—Non-seniors and elite scorers highlight the Class A boys basketball all-state first team selections, as selected by the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association. The first team selections include Sioux Falls Christian junior guard Brant Wassenaar, Pine Ridge senior guard Marvin Richard III, Vermillion senior guard Trey Hansen, West Central junior guard Connor Mebius, Hamlin senior guard Jackson Wadsworth and Clark/Willow Lake sophomore forward Sully Felberg.

Wassenaar was selected as the coaches' Class A player of the year as the top vote-getter in the all-state voting, marking the fourth time in seven years the Class A award has gone to a junior. The 6-foot-4 Chargers' standout tallied 22. 8 points, 7.

4 rebounds and 5. 5 assists per game, while hitting 64. 6% of his field goals, nearly 39% of his 3-pointers and 85% of his free throws.

Richard, a 6-foot-3 guard, was the state's leading scorer on a per-game basis, averaging 30. 3 points per contest, while adding 6. 3 rebounds and 5.

5 assists per game for the Thorpes. He also swiped 92 steals and hit 88% of his free throws. Richard broke the state single-game scoring record with 73 points on March 3 in the Region 7A playoffs, snapping a 73-year record previously held by Argonne's Delbert Gilliam in 1953.
