McLaren's Battery Crisis Hits Lando Norris as Driver Nears Grid Penalty
McLaren's battery crisis forces Lando Norris close to grid penalty
In an electrifying turn of events at the Japanese Grand Prix, McLaren’s relentless battery issues have led to driver Lando Norris being just one replacement away from facing a grid penalty. After missing out on Friday and early Saturday due to electrical malfunctions, Norris only managed 14 laps in FP3 before the team once again had to swap batteries for the third time this season. Under F1 rules, drivers are limited to two battery packs per season, but now Norris is using up his last allowable unit.
McLaren’s engineers have been working overtime to fix the ongoing problems with their power unit and energy recovery system (ERS) batteries, which has left Norris struggling for reliability throughout the season. With a grid penalty looming, team principal Andrea Stella acknowledges that Mercedes’ strong performance since testing has put pressure on McLaren to make improvements. Engineers from Mercedes even visited the Woking garage during FP3 to try and understand what’s going wrong with Norris' batteries.
As the championship gears up for its next round in Brazil, it remains unclear whether Norris will be able to secure a clean start at the grid despite his tireless efforts on track this season.
