Lando Norris is Already on the Brink of Massive F1 Grid Penalties

The 2026 Formula 1 season has barely cleared the starting line, but McLaren’s Lando Norris is already staring down the barrel of a massive grid penalty. While other drivers are settling into the groove of the long 26-race calendar, the reigning champion is running out of breathing room when it comes to the mechanical reliability of his Mercedes power unit. Ahead of this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix , the FIA released a concerning technical update regarding the #1 McLaren, revealing that the British driver is already dangerously deep into his parts allocation for the year.

Maxing Out His Allocation by March McLaren has been forced to fit Norris’s car with a brand-new Energy Store and a new Control Electronics unit for the remainder of the weekend. Drivers are only permitted to use three Energy Stores and three Control Electronics units for the entire Championship season. Overnight, the McLaren team identified a deeper issue with the car’s Energy Recovery System pack, noticing that the vehicle was harvesting energy incorrectly.

The team then replaced the battery before FP3. “It is a battery issue. Mercedes HPP is replacing that now.

The team is going to have to push pretty hard, because it takes a while,” McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown said at the time. Unfortunately, another issue with the car was spotted during today’s FP3 – something that also pulled the car and driver from the practice session – and after repairs, Norris is now out of allocated spares. The Looming Threat of Grid Drops Norris will be sweating, with the championship only three race weekends into its long season.

The 2026 calendar stretches all the way into December, meaning Norris has to somehow survive the overwhelming majority of the year without suffering a single electrical or battery-related failure. With the team’s current reliability issues, this seems highly unlikely. If his McLaren requires a fourth Energy Store or Control Electronics unit at any point during the remainder of the year, he will be slapped with an automatic and severe grid penalty.
