The Kansas City Royals made a decision on rookie Jac Caglianone.
The Kansas City Royals are set to open their 2026 season against the Atlanta Braves, but one of their most intriguing young players will not be part of the starting lineup to begin the year. Much of the attention surrounding Kansas City this spring has centered on Jac Caglianone, one of the organization's top prospect who has quickly made his presence felt within the organization. After an impressive spring and valuable international experience, there was some anticipation that he could factor into the Opening Day lineup.
However, Royals manager Matt Quatraro made their decision clear when they revealed their lineup ahead of Friday’s game. Kansas City announced its starting lineup for the Opening Day matchup against the Braves, and Caglianone was not included. Now we go‼️ pic.

Vinnie Pasquantino was slotted in at first base as expected, while veteran outfielder Starling Marte drew the start in right field, effectively taking the spot Caglianone might have occupied.
The decision likely has to do with the matchup. The Braves are expected to start ace Chris Sale, a tough left‑handed pitcher, and the Royals may be opting for experience against one of the league’s top arms. Still, the move raises questions about how Kansas City plans to utilize Caglianone moving forward.
