Plano West logo (SportsDay Staff) PROSPER - Orlando Simancas' header with 2:38 remaining in the second overtime session proved to be the game winner as Plano West outlasted Southlake Carroll, 3-2, in a Class 6A Division II Region II semifinal at Children's Health Stadium. The final goal started with a corner kick by Matt Kent. Simancas, in a crowd of Plano West players, easily knocked the rebound past Carroll keeper Graham Byrne.
Simancas tied the game just over two minutes earlier off a rebound that started with a corner kick by Kent. Plano West applied tons of pressure and Simancas' shot easily blew by Byrne. "We changed our formation after Carroll scored and did not think they had seen or were ready for the change," said Plano West head coach Clint Cobb.
"After tying it we went back to our normal formation. " John Skiermont scored with 5:24 remaining in the first overtime session to give Carroll the lead. "I told our kids not to panic.
We have seen games where a team was behind by two goals late in the game and came back to win," said Cobb. It was an evenly played first half. Plano West scored quickly into the game when Max Kent blew it by the Carroll keeper.
