HUSKERS SOFTBALL Recap – Bruins Bats Quieted As Huskers Catch Fire Late: #6 NEBRASKA 4 – #7 UCLA 1
Chalk game 1 of the top 10 tilt to the Huskers as quality pitching won out over insane hitting numbers.
Hannah Camenzind saw her pitch on a 1-2 count and in the current parlance, she decided to shoot her shot. It may not have fully eased the pain of a hoops loss to Iowa for Husker Nation, but a win in the first tilt of a three-game Top 10 series against UCLA at least gave them a reason to smile on a chilly Friday night under the lights. With the Huskers trailing UCLA 1-0, stranding runners again, and running out of chances to catch up with one out in the bottom of the 5th, Camenzind took that pitch deep to the opposite field and well over the wall.
And with Jordy Frahm on 1st base, compliments of being plunked for a team-leading 8th time this season, the Huskers led 2-1 and that would be enough on their way to a 4-1 victory. Freshman Alexis Jensen got her 12th win of the season scattering 4 hits over 5 solid innings while striking out 6, walking 1 and allowing only one run against a Bruins offense which had been averaging 11. 7 per game.
Frahm reached base 3 out of 4 times without a hit and also tossed 2 hitless, scoreless innings and struck out the final batter for her 8th save of the campaign. This became a new school record for a single season dethroning the previous record holder for the previous 43 years, her coach, Rhonda Revelle. Or as Rhonda put it with a twinkle in her eye, “Let’s call it 10 or 12.
” Camenzind also knocked in a run with her eye, walking in 1 with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 6th, one of two insurance runs which gave the Huskers and Frahm breathing room – and herself 3 total RBI’s – in the 4-1 victory. Hannah Coor scored the other run in the 6th using her blinding speed to beat a throw to second for a double, and then a throw home on Kacie Hoffman’s single. And for those who love a good grab at the wall, Natalia Hill had one of those in the top of the 6th to add to her ever-growing folio of highlight-reel plays.
