Texas A&M softball drops game one to No. 1 Texas in 9–8 thriller
Texas A&M out-hit No. 1 Texas and led multiple times, but the Longhorns walked it off in the seventh to take game one of the rivalry series, 9–8.
No. 15 Texas A&M dropped a heartbreaker in Friday’s series opener against No. 1 Texas , falling 9–8 on a walk‑off fielder’s choice after a back‑and‑forth slugfest at McCombs Field.
The Aggies out-hit the Longhorns 13–10, scored in each of the first five innings, and played error‑free defense. It was the kind of game that felt destined to be decided by whichever team had the final at‑bat and Texas ultimately had that edge. A&M struck first in the top of the opening frame on an RBI single from Michaela Wark, but Texas answered immediately with a pair of solo home runs to take a 2–1 lead.
The Aggies responded in the second when Kennedy Powell drove in KK Dement, then broke things open in the third. Dement doubled home Tallen Edwards, and Paislie Allen followed with a two‑run homer to push the lead to 5–2. Texas countered again, tying the game 5–5 in the bottom half, but Wark delivered her second big swing of the night with a two‑run single to reclaim a 7–5 advantage.
The Longhorns plated one in the fourth, and A&M matched it in the fifth on an RBI single from Mya Perez. True to form, Texas answered once more, leveling the score 8–8 heading into the sixth. After a scoreless inning from both sides, the Longhorns mounted the decisive threat in the seventh.
